Preparing the path to Tier IV

25 Jul 2017, Security by Micron21

To achieve a Tier IV Fault Tolerant classification, Micron21 partnered with Vertiv for premium infrastructure protection.

A Tier IV data centre requires high reliability and active fault monitoring capabilities that provide stable power 24 hours, seven days a week. Looking for a partner to help support our journey to Tier IV certification was no easy task. Vertiv (formerly Emerson Network Power) was among the small group of suppliers who could support the level of protection Micron21 required for our Melbourne data centre.

James Braunegg explains, "My main goal was to have a purpose-built facility that provides my customers with the very best in service and redundancy – keeping them online at all times. Having had a long-standing relationship with Vertiv, they were able to help, and introduce me to other experts in this field."

Vertiv could provide a power and cooling solution that aligned with the stringent standards of the Uptime Institute. They also provided support in the form of onsite project management and setup.

"Uptime Institute is very stringent when it comes to awarding Tier IV certification and it is very critical for us to have a partner who understands exactly what we need, not just putting together solutions, but providing the skill set and capability to facilitate the robust design needed for an Uptime Institute Tier IV data centre,” says James.

The solution.

The data centre relies on a free-cooling chilled water solution with inbuilt redundancy. The facility has also deployed a separate refrigerant solution – with both running independently for optimum protection. Micron21 is uniquely able to offer 100 percent cooling system redundancy to the racks contained within the facility.

The solution included:

  • Liebert® HPC-M free-cooling chillers
  • Knurr E-series racks
  • Chloride 80NET XL UPS
  • Liebert® XDP cooling systems
  • Liebert® PEX CRAC & Liebert® CRV (in-row coolers)

The project scope required a total engineered solution that addressed the demands of Tier IV in its entirety – as well as collaboration between the global and Australian Vertiv teams.

"Collaborating with the Vertiv global team allowed us to better understand what Micron21 needed, and enabled us to provide the perfect solution to achieve the Uptime Institute Tier IV rating,” said Tony Gaunt, Senior Director for Colocation and Cloud, Vertiv Asia.

Today, following the support from Vertiv, we pride ourselves in offering a range of solutions within a Tier IV certified environment. Micron21 hosts a large array of high-profile clientele, including local, national and international businesses and government agencies that rely on us to provide mission critical services around the clock.
